I sell bicycle frame kits and some parts and accessories.
The frames are dropshipped to clients in the EU and USA from Hungary but all the variable parts of each order (other parts that complete the frame, other components and accessories) will be shipped from inventory here in Stockholm.
A typical box would be, at its smallest, 85x27x23cm and between 1 and 6 kg. Most of these are going to individuals rather than businesses. These customers are fine with waiting a little, shipping doesn’t have to be very urgent.
I’m starting to find some reasonably priced solutions to send such parcels inside the EU, but I’m having a lot of trouble finding anything decent to send them to the USA and elsewhere in the world.
I’m used to typical postal EMS services or postal consolidators that don’t charge for volume and that just charge a flat rate ”oversize” parcel fee when the linear dimensions are over 150cm or so.
For example I would consider that a reasonable fee+delay for a parcel of the size stated above and weighing 5kg would be the 35 euros that DHL Global Mail Parcel charges for it from Germany to the USA, with a delay of 2 weeks or so.
The trouble is, the only international parcel services I’ve found in Sweden so far not only charge way too much for weight, but on top they want 200 to 283 kg per cubic meter of volume weight = 11 to 15kg in the case of the parcel size stated above. The fees PostNord wants for EMS are simply ridiculous, 3-4 times what it costs me to import the same parcel from the USA or Taiwan via EMS.
Am I missing out on the Holy Grail of cheap international shipping? I had high hopes in DHL’s Global Mail to be available in Sweden but they want a minimum of 5000 parcels/year and I’ll probably have about 400/year in 2015.
